Typical local olives

Extra-vergin olive oil from Taggiasca and Pignola olives

The typical local olives are the so-called Taggiasca and Pignola. In particular the designation "Riviera del Ponente Savona" is reserved for extra virgin olive oil  from Taggiasca olive groves for at least 60%. Other varieties can be  present but not exceeding 40%.
In the Finalese there are several century old olive trees.

The pignola is known as feina (by 'Fein', the ancient word for the name of the village of Feglino). It is a late variety of olive, small and black. The oil has a slightly bitter aftertaste reminding of pine seed: the fruitiness is more intense than the other olive varieties in the area. The pignola olive tree  is smaller than the Taggiasca olive tree. The fruit is rather small, round, black. It ripens late and its pulp has a dense texture.
