Historical Archive of Finale
The Finale Historical Archives reopens to the public and researchers after relocating to the spacious spaces of the Aycardi College in Via Emanuele Celesia in Finalborgo.
The reopening of the Archives and its enhancement were made possible thanks to a two-year agreement signed between the Finale Ligure Municipal Administration, the Cultural Association "E. Celesia - Friends of the Finale Library and Museum" and the Finale section of the International Institute of Ligurian Studies, the managing body of the Finale Archaeological Museum.
Through this act, strongly desired by the late Councillor for Tourism and Culture Claudio Casanova, it is hoped that the Historical Archives, in its new location, can become a research center at the service of scholars not only from Italy, given the relevance that the marquisate has had in European history.
The Archival and Bibliographical Superintendence of Liguria, directed by Francesca Imperiale, has arranged for the reorganization and new inventorying of the materials, which have been arranged in fireproof cabinets to ensure their best preservation. Thanks to funding from the Ministry of Culture, restoration of important documents and other interventions on the archival heritage are also being planned.
The Historical Archive preserves documentation that is fundamental for the study and understanding of the events of Finale from the second half of the 16th century, when the marquisate was still ruled by the Del Carretto family. Of great importance are the many documents concerning Spanish rule (1602-1707) and that of the Republic of Genoa, which acquired the former imperial fief in 1713.
The archive also contains records concerning the various municipal administrations of the Finale area prior to the reunion of Finalmarina, Finalborgo and Finalpia into the single entity constituted by the Municipality of Finale Ligure, created in 1927.
In addition to the management of the archives, thanks to the coordination of Flavio Menardi Noguera, the project includes the sorting and management of the Special Sections of the Library - Mediateca Finalese, which will soon be open to the public in Palazzo Ricci in Finalborgo. This will make it possible to consult both the Music Section, consisting of one of the most important collections of sound documents in Liguria, and the Photographic Section called "Image Bank."
Thanks to the sensitivity of the municipal administration and the synergies created among the various institutions and cultural associations, Finale thus adds another piece to a cultural offer among the most significant in the regional panorama.
The Archive will be open to the public at the following times:
- Tuesday and Thursday 2.00pm-6.30pm
- Saturday 8.30-13.00
