Boragni

Hillside in the Sciusa river valley
Boragni (Ph: Provincia di Savona)

Boragni is located on the hillside in the Sciusa river valley, not far behind Orco, surrounded by terraced olive groves and vineyards.

This little group of Mediterranean houses is a clear example of fortified town, built by farmers to protect themselves from Saracen raids. Buildings are arranged in a circle, leaning against one another, with few and small openings to the outside equipped with railings, while inside there are well-protected, small open spaces used as gardens and courtyards. Boragni is crossed from side to side by a fortified passage covered with stone vaults, a sure way of internal communication, suddenly illuminated by the green of small gardens.

Thanks to its magnificent surroundings, Boragni is a destination for hikers and climbers: from here depart paths for Strapatente and Balconi caves and to nearby rock climbing. In the so-called "Bastionata di Boragni", a large cliff overlooking the village, the water has eroded strongly karstic rock leaving a picturesque landscape, full of crevices, caves and cracked walls in which there are many climbing routes of all levels.
